Cafe Curtains

Cafe curtains cover the lower part of a window, while full-length curtains run much higher and down toward the floor. Cafe curtains are better when you want daytime light from the top of the window plus privacy at eye level. Full-length curtains are better for full coverage and stronger light blocking.

Measure from the top of your rod to where you want the curtain to end, then choose the closest finished length. Shorter lengths look lighter and more casual; longer cafe lengths give more privacy. The best choice is the one that matches your rod position and daily privacy needs, not just window size alone.

For kitchens, prioritize easy care and practical privacy. For breakfast nooks, choose softer textures with balanced light. For dining corners, use styles that feel slightly more polished and provide comfortable seated privacy. Start with function by space, then choose color and pattern.

Solid styles are the easiest to match and keep clean visually. Stripes add structure and direction. Florals feel decorative and softer. Embroidery adds detail and texture without a full print. If your room already has strong patterns, choose a calmer curtain style to keep balance.

Use a limited color palette and keep large surfaces simple. Choose low-contrast patterns or solids, and avoid competing prints across backsplash, rugs, and textiles. Keep rod hardware and accessories minimal. One clear focal point works better than several bold elements in a compact space.

Place the rod around the window midline or slightly above it, depending on how much lower-window coverage you want. The goal is to keep top light while protecting lower privacy. Before final installation, test height with a tape mark and check the look from standing and seated positions.

Base it on rod width and fullness. For a soft, gathered look, total curtain width should usually be about 1.5x to 2x rod width. Smaller windows may work with one panel; wider windows usually look better with two panels for balance and coverage.

Choose custom size when your measured drop falls between standard lengths, your window is unusually wide or narrow, or you want a precise visual alignment with trim, tile, or shelf lines. Custom sizing is also better when standard panel combinations cannot give the fullness you want.
