94/96 Inch Curtains

With the rod mounted at ceiling level on an 8 foot (96 inch) ceiling, 94 inch curtains will rest about 2 inches above the floor — a clean, just-hovering finish. If the rod sits 4 to 6 inches above the window trim, which on an 8 foot ceiling is typically around 84 to 88 inches from the floor, a 94 inch curtain will reach the floor and create a light 2 to 4 inch puddle. 94 and 96 inch curtains are designed for 9 foot (108 inch) ceilings. With the rod mounted 4 to 6 inches below the ceiling — typically around 102 to 104 inches from the floor — a 94 inch curtain hangs just above the floor and a 96 inch curtain lightly touches it. For 10 foot ceilings, 94 and 96 inch curtains will hang several inches above the floor unless you mount the rod very close to the ceiling.

For a floor-touching result, mount the rod about 4 to 6 inches below the ceiling, which places it at roughly 102 to 104 inches from the floor on a standard 9 foot ceiling. This height allows the 96 inch curtain to reach just above or lightly touch the floor, and the 94 inch curtain to hover about 2 inches above. If you want a more dramatic puddle of 2 to 4 inches, keep the rod at the same height and choose the 96 inch panel.

For a standard single window (36 to 48 inches wide), two 55 inch panels provide 110 inches of total fabric width and about 2.3x fullness. A simple rule: divide your rod width by 55 and round up, then add one more panel if you want fuller gathers.

A rod that extends 8 to 10 inches past the window frame on each side gives the panel room to stack without covering the glass. Rooms with 9 foot ceilings often have wider windows than 8 foot rooms, so the rod is usually longer as well. A good starting point is total window width plus 16 to 20 inches. A wider rod also lets you pull the panel clear of the window during the day, which is why the rod is usually bought wider than the window rather than matched to it.

On a 10 foot (120 inch) ceiling with the rod mounted 4 to 6 inches below the ceiling — typically around 114 to 116 inches from the floor — a 96 inch curtain would hang 18 to 20 inches above the floor, an awkward in-between length. A 94 inch curtain would hang even higher. For 10 foot ceilings, 108 inch curtains are the standard floor-length option. You can still use 94/96 inch curtains on a 10 foot ceiling if you mount the rod lower, closer to the window frame, and accept a shorter non-floor-length drop.
