How to Measure in 4 Steps

Step 1: Mark the rod placement

Decide where the top of the curtain will fall. For most kitchens, the rod sits 1 to 2 inches above the lower sash or halfway up the window frame. Mark both sides with a pencil.

Step 2: Measure the rod width

Measure between the two marks (or between the finials if the rod is already up). This is the number you use to determine panel count from the table above. Do not measure the glass itself — the rod typically extends slightly beyond the frame.

Step 3: Measure the drop

Measure straight down from the rod line to the point where you want the curtain to end. Most people aim for the sill or about 1 inch below it. Compare this number to the three standard lengths and pick the closest match.

Step 4: Check clearance below

Make sure the chosen length does not interfere with the countertop, faucet, or anything mounted below the window. A 36-inch panel works best when there is at least 38 inches of clear space from the rod to the obstruction.

18 in vs 24 in vs 36 in: When to Use Each

18-inch cafe curtains

These cover a narrow band of glass. They work well above small bathroom windows, on cabinet-door cutouts, or in any spot where you want light but need a finished edge. Because the drop is short, 18-inch panels leave most of the window open.

24-inch cafe curtains

This is the most ordered length for kitchen sinks. A 24-inch drop covers roughly the lower third of a standard 60-inch-tall window, which blocks the view of the countertop and sink area from outside while keeping the upper glass open for daylight. Two 55-inch panels on a 37- to 48-inch rod give about 1.5 to 1.8x fullness.

36-inch cafe curtains

These cover about half of a standard window. They suit laundry rooms, bathrooms next to counters, and kitchens where the lower sill is deep and you want more privacy. Three 55-inch panels across a 72- to 84-inch rod provide full, even coverage on wider kitchen windows.
