FAQ
How do I choose the right placemat size?
Start with your plate size — a placemat should be at least 1 inch larger than your plate on all sides. A 10-inch dinner plate fits well on a 12 × 18 inch (30 × 45 cm) placemat. Also consider your table size and how many seats you need. For a complete size chart and measuring guide, see our Placemat Size Guide.
How many placemats come in a set?
Most of our placemats are sold in sets of 4, 6, 8, and 12. Choose the set size that matches your table seating, or size up for washing spares. A set of 4 works for a 4-seat table, a set of 6 for a 6-seat table, and so on. Some styles may come in additional set sizes — check the product page options for exact availability. All placemats in a set are identical in color, material, and size.
Can you put hot plates on these placemats?
Warm plates at eating temperature (120-160°F / 49-71°C) can go directly on the placemat. For pots and dishes straight from the oven or stovetop (300°F+ / 149°C+), use a trivet or hot pad on top. Fabric placemats protect against scratches and spills — they are not insulation pads.
How do you wash these placemats?
Hand wash in cool water (≤86°F / 30°C) with mild detergent. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners. Gently squeeze out water without wringing, then reshape flat and air dry. Do not tumble dry on high heat, as this can cause shrinkage. For detailed care tips by material, see our Placemat Material Guide.
Do these placemats shrink?
Natural fiber placemats (linen and cotton) typically shrink 3-5% after the first wash. Cotton-linen blends shrink less, around 2%. To minimize shrinkage, wash in cool water and air dry flat. The first-wash shrinkage is normal and factored into the product sizing.
Do placemats prevent water rings?
Fabric placemats absorb condensation from cold glasses and help prevent water rings on wood and veneer tabletops. For best results, blot wet areas promptly and do not let standing water sit on the placemat for extended periods. Fabric placemats are not fully waterproof — for heavy spills or wet dishes, wipe up right away.
Can I use these placemats with a tablecloth or table runner?
Yes. Placemats sit on top of a tablecloth to define each place setting while adding a layered look. The placemat should be smaller than the tablecloth so the tablecloth remains visible as a backdrop. You can also add a table runner down the center of the table with placemats on either side for a structured, layered appearance. For layering tips and size coordination, see our tablecloth collection and table runner collection.
Do the placemat color and size match the photos?
We photograph each product in natural light to show colors as accurately as possible. However, color may vary slightly due to different monitor and screen settings. All listed sizes are measured by hand before shipping — minor variations of up to 0.4 inch (1 cm) are normal for handcrafted fabric items.
