Black placemats often read as too formal or too heavy for everyday use — lay a solid black mat on a kitchen table and the whole meal feels like a planned dinner party rather than a weeknight supper. The Black Farmhouse Striped Placemats soften that effect by running thin white stripes across a black cotton-polyester base, with wide black gaps between each line. The spacing is intentional — because the white stripes sit far apart, the black base still dominates the surface, but the white lines break up the solid field just enough to keep the table feeling open. Each 16 by 24 inch rectangle has enough body to lie flat and stay in place through meals, and the wider-than-standard size means a full place setting fits without anything hanging over the edge.

On a light wood or whitewashed dining table, these placemats make white stoneware and cream ceramic plates stand out sharply against the dark surface, while brushed brass flatware adds a warm metallic note that keeps the black from reading cold. A single dried pampas grass stem in a small glass vase at each setting adds texture without competing with the stripe pattern. The wide gap between white stripes means the table still reads as predominantly black — which grounds each setting — but the lines add enough structure that the placemat does not look like a plain dark mat. For everyday dining, that balance works from a casual weekday breakfast through to a more dressed-up weekend supper.

Each set includes 4, 6, 8, or 12 placemats to fit tables from a four-seat kitchen to a full twelve-top dining room. The double-layer cotton-polyester construction keeps corners from curling, and the thin white stripes hold their crisp definition against the black base through gentle machine washing and low-heat ironing.

FAQ

How do I choose the right placemat size?

Start with your plate size — a placemat should be at least 1 inch larger than your plate on all sides. A 10-inch dinner plate fits well on a 12 × 18 inch (30 × 45 cm) placemat. Also consider your table size and how many seats you need. For a complete size chart and measuring guide, see our Placemat Size Guide.

How many placemats come in a set?

Most of our placemats are sold in sets of 4, 6, 8, and 12. Choose the set size that matches your table seating, or size up for washing spares. A set of 4 works for a 4-seat table, a set of 6 for a 6-seat table, and so on. Some styles may come in additional set sizes — check the product page options for exact availability. All placemats in a set are identical in color, material, and size.

Can you put hot plates on these placemats?

Warm plates at eating temperature (120-160°F / 49-71°C) can go directly on the placemat. For pots and dishes straight from the oven or stovetop (300°F+ / 149°C+), use a trivet or hot pad on top. Fabric placemats protect against scratches and spills — they are not insulation pads.

How do you wash these placemats?

Hand wash in cool water (≤86°F / 30°C) with mild detergent. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners. Gently squeeze out water without wringing, then reshape flat and air dry. Do not tumble dry on high heat, as this can cause shrinkage. For detailed care tips by material, see our Placemat Material Guide.

Do these placemats shrink?

Natural fiber placemats (linen and cotton) typically shrink 3-5% after the first wash. Cotton-linen blends shrink less, around 2%. To minimize shrinkage, wash in cool water and air dry flat. The first-wash shrinkage is normal and factored into the product sizing.

Do placemats prevent water rings?

Fabric placemats absorb condensation from cold glasses and help prevent water rings on wood and veneer tabletops. For best results, blot wet areas promptly and do not let standing water sit on the placemat for extended periods. Fabric placemats are not fully waterproof — for heavy spills or wet dishes, wipe up right away.

Can I use these placemats with a tablecloth or table runner?

Yes. Placemats sit on top of a tablecloth to define each place setting while adding a layered look. The placemat should be smaller than the tablecloth so the tablecloth remains visible as a backdrop. You can also add a table runner down the center of the table with placemats on either side for a structured, layered appearance. For layering tips and size coordination, see our tablecloth collection and table runner collection.

Do the placemat color and size match the photos?

We photograph each product in natural light to show colors as accurately as possible. However, color may vary slightly due to different monitor and screen settings. All listed sizes are measured by hand before shipping — minor variations of up to 0.4 inch (1 cm) are normal for handcrafted fabric items.
